The Impact of Information Disruption: A Phenomenological Study of How Online Narratives Affect Perceptions and Experiences in Muslim Polygamous Families

Abstract

This study aims to deeply understand how information disruption, mediated by online narratives, affects the construction of individual perceptions and subjective experiences in Muslim polygamous families in Indonesia. Adopting an interpretive phenomenological approach, this study explores the meanings attached by husbands, wives, and other family members to the information they encounter and interact in the digital realm related to the practice of polygamy. The main focus is on how the diverse representations of polygamy on online platforms, from religious justification to social criticism, affect family members' understanding, emotions, relational dynamics, and coping strategies. Through in-depth interviews and thematic analysis of participants' narratives, this study delves into the essence of their experiences in navigating a complex and often contradictory digital information landscape. The findings of this study are expected to make a significant contribution to the study of the sociology of religion, family, and media, and offer a nuanced perspective to understand the impact of information disruption on minority groups and sensitive social practices.
